This is an unmissable chance if you are in Normandy next Saturday. The Merville Gun Battery takes part in the European Night of Museums, which means that no entrance ticket will be required to visit the famous Dakota aircraft on display at the Museum. 16 May 2015 from 20:00 until 23:00.
Another Knight of Freedom has left us. Sergeant Bob "Paddy" Jenkins of the 9th Parachute Battalion was one of the few remaining members of the party that actually took part in the assault on the Merville Battery. In the following excerpt, taken from The Day The Devils Dropped In by Neil Barber, Sergeant Len Daniels mentions "Paddy" Jenkins:
"I heard something and looked, and Sergeant Jenkins was standing up on this concrete position that I stood on previously. He'd got his rifle pointing up the hill. I looked to see what was happening and he shot, and a Jerry came rolling down off the casemate. He (Paddy) jumped over the top of us and rammed his bayonet into him".
